Description
The A6M Zero was the primary fighter aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service from 1940 to 1945. The A6M2 Model 21 was a long-range carrier-based fighter aircraft, and was considered the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world when it was introduced early in World War II. It achieved this status due to its excellent maneuverability and very long range. The A6M2 Model 21 entered service in October 1941, and was extensively used during the initial months of the Pacific War, including the attack on Pearl Harbor. The aircraft maintained a positive kill ratio in every major battle from 1941 to mid-1942, and was the dominant fighter type in the Pacific Theater until mid-1943, when newer Allied fighters began to match or exceed its capabilities.
