Mitsubishi A6M Zero “Zeke”
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero, code-named “Zeke” by the Allies, was the Japanese Navy’s principal fighter throughout the Pacific War. Development began in 1937, when Mitsubishi was asked to design a fighter combining high speed, exceptional maneuverability, long range, rapid climbing performance and powerful armament.
To achieve these demanding specifications, great emphasis was placed on reducing weight and improving aerodynamics. The prototype first flew in 1939 and was subsequently fitted with the 940 hp Nakajima Sakae Type 12 engine. This led to the Zero Type 11, which proved highly effective during operations in China.
The improved Zero Type 21 became one of the best-known Japanese fighters of World War II. With folding wingtips and increased fuel capacity, it offered exceptional range and took part in major operations including the attack on Pearl Harbor, the invasion of the Philippines and the Indian Ocean campaign.
A floatplane derivative was also developed, while both Mitsubishi and Nakajima manufactured the Zero. Approximately 3,600 aircraft of the versions referred to here were produced, making the Zero one of the most iconic Japanese combat aircraft of the Pacific War.
