Description
In 1937 the IJN sought a new long-range carrier fighter, commissioning Mitsubishi and Nakajima to design prototypes. The result was the aircraft that became the legendary Zero. The Navy demanded unprecedented endurance, high speed, and heavy armament centered on 20 mm cannon—far superior to the 7.7 mm guns then standard. Early A6M1 prototypes used Mitsubishi’s Zuisei engine, but vibration issues and a troublesome two-stage supercharger led to adoption of Nakajima’s Sakae, creating the A6M2. Designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, the prototype featured a minimal cowling intake and a two-blade prop later replaced by a three-blade unit. Maiden-flown on April 1, 1939, it evolved into one of WWII’s most effective naval fighters.
