Description
The Concorde was a supersonic passenger airliner jointly developed by Britain and France through a partnership between Aérospatiale and British Aircraft Corporation. It first flew in 1969 and entered commercial service in 1976 with Air France and British Airways. Designed for ultra-fast long-distance travel, Concorde could cruise at speeds over Mach 2 (around 2,180 km/h), cutting transatlantic flight times between Europe and North America to just over three hours.
Its sleek delta-wing design, slender fuselage, and powerful Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 engines allowed it to operate at high altitude and extreme speed while maintaining stability. The aircraft typically carried around 100 passengers in a luxurious, high-fare configuration, making it a symbol of prestige and technological achievement rather than mass transport.
Despite its innovation, Concorde faced challenges including high operating costs, limited routes, noise restrictions due to sonic booms, and rising fuel prices. After more than 25 years of service, it was retired in 2003. Today, Concorde remains one of the most iconic aircraft ever built, representing the peak of commercial supersonic aviation.
