Description
The Soviet MiG-3 late version was a high-altitude fighter developed in 1941 as an improved variant of the original MiG-3. Designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau, it featured a more powerful AM-35A engine optimized for high-altitude performance, reinforced airframe, and improved cockpit instrumentation. While intended for interception and high-altitude combat, most MiG-3s were used at lower altitudes on the Eastern Front, where their performance was less effective against German aircraft. Late versions incorporated modifications to improve handling, visibility, and survivability. Armed with one 12.7 mm UBK machine gun and two 7.62 mm ShKAS guns, the MiG-3 served primarily in 1941–1942 before being gradually replaced by more versatile fighters like the Yak-1 and LaGG-3.
