Description
The Messerschmitt Me 410, nicknamed the Hornisse (Hornet), was a German heavy fighter and Schnellbomber used by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Its notoriously flawed predecessor was Me-210. The design work of Me-410 began in 1938 and it was designed to replace the Bf 110 fighter. The Me 410 suffered some serious problems after it entered service in 1940, which forced Messerschmitt AG to do a series of modification and test. Finally, the Me-410 was introduced. The Me-410 was very similar in appearance to the Me-210, still using a two-seat design. It was fitted with a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603A engine, which greatly improved its flight performance, resulting in a new designation. Deliveries to the Luftwaffe started in January 1943. By the end of World War II, approximately 1200 Me-410s were built. The Me-410B fighter was powered by a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603G engine. Me-410 B-2/U4, called the bomber-killer, was even fitted with a BK5 50-mm cannon (based on the KWK39 L60 anti-tank gun) in the weapons bay, which greatly enhanced its combat capabilities. The specifications of the Me-410 are as following: Length: 13.29m; Wingspan: 16.34m; Maximum speed: 624 km/h (at altitude 6700 m); Service ceiling: 10000 m; Range: 2300 km.
