Description
The Messerschmitt Me 410 fighter-bomber evolved from the troubled Me 210, originally designed in 1938 to replace the Bf 110 heavy fighter. Test flights revealed serious stability problems, delaying mass production. After major improvements—including a lengthened fuselage and powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines—the aircraft entered service in 1942 as the Me 410. During WWII the Luftwaffe demanded heavier air-to-air armament, leading to specialized variants. The Me 410 B-2/U2 was equipped with a gun pod carrying two 20 mm MG 151 cannons in the bomb bay instead of bombs. It could also carry WGR rockets under the wings. The later Me 410 B-2/U2/R4 added an external gun pod with two more MG 151 cannons, greatly increasing firepower. The aircraft measured 12.56 m in length with a 16.34 m wingspan.
