Description

The Messerschmitt Me 321 Gigant was originally conceived for the invasion of Britain, for which the German Oberkommando needed a glider capable of carrying tanks, guns and vehicles.

Following the fall of the plans, the Messerschmitt firm began intensive work in Fall 1940 and managed to present the prototype vehicle in February 1941, followed by the first flights during the summer of the same year. The huge-sized fuselage of the "Gigant" was a fabric-covered steel tubular framework which could store up to 24 tons of assorted load in its 100 m3 van; there were no problems for unloading operations thanks to its large frontal door clam-shell doors. The Me 321 could land on rough fields thanks to its 22 hydraulically operated main landing gear wheels.

Following 100 prototypes and pre-series models, during snatch-tests in the summer, mechanical damages occurred; no more than 200 Gigants were produced during 1942. Flight compartment was placed above the nose to offer better visibility; the ME 321 6/1 variant was fitted with single flying controls, the latter B/1 often having provision for dual controls, so that pilot and co-pilot could work in strain during long flights.
