Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109G, known as the “Gustav,” was one of the most numerous and important variants of Germany’s famous Bf 109 fighter during World War II. Introduced in 1942, it was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine producing about 1,475 hp, allowing a top speed of around 640 km/h (398 mph). Compared to earlier versions, the Bf 109G had stronger armament and improved equipment. Standard weapons included one 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns mounted above the engine. The aircraft served on every major front, including the Eastern Front, Mediterranean, and in the defense of Germany. Although heavier than earlier models, the “Gustav” remained a powerful and versatile interceptor used by many Luftwaffe fighter units.
