Description

The Bf109G was a design modification intended to compensate for the premature obsolescence (less than one year after deployment) of the Bf109F model, a situation brought about by dramatic Allied aircraft developments. Points under consideration for improvement in the new design included speed, firepower and defensive armor, as well as various ordnance loadout configuration kits to enable the aircraft to perform a wide variety of missions. Because no aerodynamic improvements on the F model airframe were attempted, and as the internal armor layout and other minor modifications involved in the G model upgrade were relatively simple, the G series, starting with the G-0 model, was able to go into production in October 1941, a mere three months after conception of the design. Subsequent models included the high altitude capable G-1, featuring a pressurized cabin, the G-2, with an unpressurized cabin, the G-3, with landing gear improvements and pressurized cabin. The G-4 was designed as a mid-altitude fighter, thus negating the need for a pressurized cabin. However, as the upgunned G-5 and G-6 models were soon developed, featuring MG131 13mm machine guns in place of the MG17 7.92mm rifle calibre machine guns of earlier Bf109 models, production of the G-4 model only reached about 1,000 aircraft. Aircraft equipped with the G-4 aerial camera mount option, including the G-4/R2, R3 and R4 models, were used to perform reconnaissance missions. Crew: one; Length: 9.06m; Wingspan: 9.76m; Height: 2.5m; Weight, fully loaded: 3,148kg; Engine: DB605A (rated at 1,475 HP at takeoff); Fixed armament: MG17 x2, MG151 x1.
