Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109G was introduced to counter rapid Allied fighter advances that had rendered the earlier Bf 109F nearly obsolete within a year. Rather than redesigning the airframe, German engineers focused on improved speed, heavier armament, stronger armor protection, and adaptable ordnance kits for multiple mission roles. Entering production in October 1941, only months after conception, the G series evolved quickly. Variants included the high-altitude G-1 with a pressurized cockpit, the unpressurized G-2, and the G-3 with landing gear refinements. Powered by a 1,475 hp DB 605A engine, it reached 640 km/h and carried two 7.92 mm MG 17s and one 20 mm MG 151 cannon.
