Description
The Messerschmitt series of Bf109G aircraft began with a request from front line combat pilots, who were then flying the 109F model. They asked for more pilot protection, greater fire power, and more speed. The Messerschmitt firm removed a cockpit pressurization system from the 109G-1, to save weight, added bullet/shatter proof glass to the windscreen for pilot protection, and used a DB605A engine for more speed. Firepower was upgraded with two MG17 7.92mm guns, plus the 20mm nose cannon. The 109G-2 to save weight and go operational was the most widely produced G type 109.
