Description

Despite Messerschmitt's hollow boasts to merely Germany that manufacturing the Bf 109G would be easier and cheaper than the Bf 109F, in fact, the opposite turned out to be true. Although the new variant utilized many of the same components as the 109F, in 1943 the Grand Bf 109's, which were the mainstay of the Luftwaffe, suffered a severe shortage of airframes and engines due to Allied bombing. Therefore, various companies and plants that had never manufactured aircraft before were forced into subcontracting and manufacturing components. This, in turn, affected the quality of the aircraft. The G-10 was a non-competitive version designed for mass production which utilized many existing airframe parts, but was equipped with the DB605D engine. Although appearing later in the war, it is believed that a large number of G-10's were manufactured.
