Description

Classed as one of the outstanding fighter designs of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe's most important single-seat fighter from 1938 until 1945. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt in 1934 the Bf 109 was first put into service during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and carried on for a further two years as Germany's fighter during the first stages of WW2. Armed with two machine guns, the Luftwaffe's fighter first saw combat during the Battle of Britain in September 1940. The Battle of Britain pitted against the RAF's Spitfire, and for the first time the Bf 109 pulled against the German's much-vaunted high-speed fighter its equal in combat. The type was later used in the fast fighter-bomber role operating from France against selected targets in southern England. The E version also operated in the Mediterranean, North Africa and Russia. More than 33,000 Bf 109s of all variants were produced, a number unsurpassed by any other wartime aircraft. Powerplant of the Bf 109E-4 was a 1,100hp Daimler-Benz DB601 engine, giving a maximum speed of 520kmh to 5,000 metres. Its armament consisted of two 20mm MG FF mounted 20mm MG FF cannons of Typ MG FF and two 7.9mm MG 17 machine guns in the upper forward fuselage. Wingspan: 9.86m (32ft 4.8in). Length: 8.63m (28ft 3.2in). Height: 2.5m (8ft 2in).
