Description
In April 1941 the Luftwaffe 1/JG27 Bf109E-4's arrived in North Africa. Fighter aircraft faced harsh replacement demands the high heat and harsh sandy conditions of the Gazala desert they partially operated in. A sand filter was installed on the supercharger air intake, plus protective shields were installed around fuel and hydraulic lines. A special desert survival kit was carried. In June 1941 Bf109E-4/7s modified for desert use.
