Description
In April 1941 the Luftwaffe's 1./JG27 Bf109E-4's arrived in North Africa. These aircraft had been tropicalized for use in the high heat and harsh sandy conditions of the Gazala Airfield they initially operated from. A sand filter was installed on the supercharger air intake, plus protective shields were installed around fuel and hydraulic lines. A special desert survival kit was also carried. In June 1941 7./JG26 transferred from Sicily to N.Africa,also bringing Bf109E-7's modified for desert use.
