Designed to break up B-17 'boxes' the U-4 variant carried a single 50mm Rheinmetall Mk 214a (or BK 5) automatic cannon weighing 540kg (with 22 rounds of ammo, it was reduced to 15-17 rounds in practice) mounted in the lower nose in place of the four MK 108 cannon in Me262A-1a. The first production V080 and application was mounted on Messerschmitt Me262A-1a, Wk Nr 170083 (V080) in Augsburg, Bavaria in November 1944 and tested in December 1944 and January 1945.
