Description
The McDonnell F3H-2 Demon was a carrier-based jet fighter developed for the United States Navy during the 1950s. Designed as an all-weather interceptor, it entered service in 1956 and became one of the Navy’s primary fleet defense aircraft before the arrival of more advanced fighters. Powered by a single Allison J71 turbojet engine, the F3H-2 could reach speeds of approximately 1,150 km/h (715 mph) and operate effectively from aircraft carriers in a variety of conditions. The aircraft was armed with four 20 mm cannons and could carry air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow, making it one of the first Navy fighters designed to employ guided missile weaponry. Known for its large airframe, distinctive swept wings, and strong carrier handling characteristics, the Demon helped bridge the gap between early jet fighters and the supersonic aircraft that followed. It also served as the direct predecessor to the legendary McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, one of the most successful military aircraft of the Cold War era.
