Description
The McDonnell Douglas F-15E dual role fighter is an F-15 Eagle modified in order to augment the ground attack capabilities of the aircraft. In order to allow the aircraft to fulfill its requirements, some changes have been made.
The most obvious changes are the addition of two conformal fuel tanks, installed on either side of the fuselage. Further, on the outer pylons area of the wing, provisions have been fitted as weapons stations, vastly increasing the amount of armament the aircraft can handle. In the aft cockpit area, special provisions for ground attack missions as well as systems for special sensors have been installed. The F-15E has also been equipped with the LANTIRN system, greatly increasing its night navigation and attack capabilities. This system employs FLIR (Forward Looking Infra-Red) and laser CRT projection as nighttime navigational aids.
