Description

The Glenn Martin 167, also known as the Martin Maryland, was a twin-engine light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft developed in the late 1930s. Designed for speed and survivability, it featured a sleek airframe, good altitude performance, and a relatively heavy defensive armament for its class. Originally ordered by France, the aircraft entered service with the Armée de l’Air and later with British and Allied forces after the fall of France. The Martin 167 proved well suited to reconnaissance, coastal patrol, and light bombing missions, particularly in the Mediterranean and North African theaters. Crews valued its reliability, stable handling, and ability to evade enemy fighters through speed rather than armor. Though lightly protected, its operational flexibility and solid performance made it an effective and respected aircraft during the early years of World War II.
