Description
Last of a series of good fighters, the Macchi M.C. 205 V VELTRO (Greyhound) was the logical development of the MC 200, from wich it differed mainly for the more powerful engine DB 605 of 1,475 HP and for the armament strenghned to two MG 151 cannons of 20 mm in the wings. Starting combat in the April of 1943, the M.C. 205 V showed immediately its qualities: high stability and the remarkable characteristics exposed at low altitudes proved it very manouvrable in dogfights and flexible in hit and run, giving in Sicily. The difference between the combat means was enormous and the 8th of September 1943 the Italy surrended to the Allies. Broken in two parts, the Italy saw his pilots and planes fighting in the South with a plenty of High-hours, where used to support the Yugoslav partizan and the italian Divisione Venezia and Torrinense fighting against the nazi. In the North the pilots, nearer with emotional or ideologic motivations to the Fascist, after the re-organization in the German bases and equipped by the factory, flow with new M.C. 205 V trying to oppose to the Allies bombardments. Macchi also built after the last bombing of the May 1944, the Macchi stopped the production of the VELTRO. At the end of the war the few planes availables flown for few time as second line fighters and the passed at the Flying-Schools.
