Description
In 1936, the Italian Air Force ordered a fighter interceptor from the Macchi firm: the C.200 radial engine powered "Saetta" fighter was Macchi's offering; however, it suffered from a lack of power. The Daimler Benz 601 liquid cooled engine was imported from Germany and mated to the C.200 during the summer of 1940. This change gave the fighter the power, climb rate and maneuverability to make it the best Italian fighter to come out of WW2. It was given the designation of C.202 and named the "Folgore". A more powerful engine that could be supplied in relatively large numbers was required by the Italian Air Force afterward.
Following the requirement, the Daimler Benz DB605, the 1,475hp updated DB601 was selected. A prototype mating the DB605 engine into the C.202 airframe first flew on 19 April 1942. The major differences from a standard C.202 were a retractable tailwheel, twin oil coolers replacing the single, chin-mounted cooler on the standard and the spinner. Following the order that was placed before the first flight, this new fighter went into the production in October 1942 and was given the designation of C.205V, named Veltro (gray hound).
At the same time that the C.205V was ordered, specifications were issued for C.205N Orione with an entirely new airframe; however, due to the delay of its development the contract was cancelled and the Italian Air Force opted for the additional C.205Vs. Though the first production type Serie 1 had same armament as the latest C.202s, the later versions from the C.205V Serie III mounted 20mm cannons in the wings in place of two 7.7mm machine guns that were mounted in the earlier Serie I, against heavy-armored aircraft of allies.
