Description
The Macchi C.200 Saetta was an Italian single-seat fighter aircraft developed in the late 1930s for the Regia Aeronautica. Designed by Mario Castoldi, it featured an all-metal fuselage with a distinctive radial engine and low-wing monoplane layout. The C.200 was powered by the Fiat A.74 RC.38 radial engine, producing around 870 hp, giving it a top speed of approximately 500 km/h (310 mph) and excellent maneuverability at low to medium altitudes. Armament consisted of two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted in the engine cowling. Although lightly armed compared to contemporaries, it was robust and reliable. The C.200 saw extensive action in North Africa, Greece, and the Eastern Front, often facing more heavily armed Allied fighters. It was praised for its agility, climb rate, and handling, making it a formidable dogfighter despite its limitations in speed and firepower.
