Description
The Westland Lysander Mk.III was a rugged British army cooperation and special operations aircraft used during World War II. Designed for short takeoff and landing (STOL), it featured high-mounted wings, large flaps, and fixed spatted landing gear, allowing it to operate from improvised fields. Powered by a Bristol Mercury radial engine, it had a top speed of about 212 mph (341 km/h). While initially used for reconnaissance and artillery spotting, it became famous for clandestine missions—especially inserting and extracting agents behind enemy lines in occupied Europe, often under the cover of darkness with remarkable precision and reliability.
