Description
The P-38 Lightning was one of the most potent fighter aircraft of WWII. The J variant was one of the most numerous, with about 2,970 produced. Major improvements from earlier versions included new ailerons and a stronger electrical system. "Pathfinder" aircraft were P-38Js modified for use as lead ships in bomber formations. From D-Day onwards, the Lightning took part in various roles including escort, anti-shipping, and ground attack.
