Description
The Lockheed P-38E Lightning was an American twin-engine, twin-boom fighter developed in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II. It featured a distinctive twin-tail design, tricycle landing gear, and a central nacelle housing the pilot and armament, including four .50 caliber machine guns and a 20 mm cannon. Powered by two Allison V-1710 engines, the P-38E could reach speeds of around 624 km/h and had long range for escort and reconnaissance missions. Its versatility allowed it to perform as a high-speed interceptor, dive bomber, and photo-reconnaissance aircraft. The Lightning saw extensive service in Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa, earning a reputation for speed, firepower, and long-range capability.
