Description
The Lavochkin La-7 was one of the Soviet Union’s best fighters of World War II, entering service in 1944. An evolution of the earlier La-5, the La-7 featured a more powerful Shvetsov ASh-82FN radial engine, improved aerodynamics, and reduced weight, giving it excellent speed, climb rate, and maneuverability. Armed with two or three 20mm ShVAK cannons, it posed a serious threat to German fighters like the Bf 109 and Fw 190, especially at low to medium altitudes. Fast, rugged, and responsive, the La-7 was favored by top Soviet aces, including Ivan Kozhedub, the highest-scoring Allied ace of the war. By war’s end, over 5,700 La-7s had been built, helping secure Soviet air superiority in the final year of the conflict.
