Description

The Piper J-3 Cub, also known as the L-4 Grasshopper in its military version, is one of the most recognizable aircraft in U.S. and world aviation history. This light observation and liaison aircraft was originally developed as a civilian machine in the 1930s. During World War II, the U.S. military ordered large numbers of Cubs, designating them L-4 (USAAF) and NE-1 (U.S. Navy). The L-4 was mainly used as an artillery spotter and for liaison duties. It also served as a trainer for pilots and glider pilots. The unarmed and unarmored L-4s flew over the front lines in every theater of World War II. After the war, many L-4s were sold as surplus and helped to make general aviation popular. Today, more than 80 years after its first flight, there are still many Cubs flying.
