Description
The Ki-61-I Hien, codenamed "Tony" by the Allies, was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of WWII to use a liquid-cooled engine. Designed for lightness and balance, it offered strong high-altitude performance and maneuverability. However, Japan’s limited experience with liquid engines led to reliability issues, partly mitigated in mainland Japan where maintenance and parts were more available. The Hien served in the Philippines, New Guinea, and homeland defense. The famed 244th Sentai, led by Major T. Kobayashi, flew the Ki-61-I and claimed 150 B-29 kills, using the fighter until the end of the war.
