The Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden Type 11 was a Japanese Navy fighter evolved from a floatplane. It featured a powerful engine, excellent performance, and unique long landing gear to accommodate a large propeller. About 1,000 were produced for WW2 combat.

Description
The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden evolved from the N1K1 "Kyofu" floatplane into one of Japan’s most advanced land-based fighters of WWII. Authorized in early 1942, the first prototype flew in December that year. Retaining the Kyofu’s basic airframe, it featured a more compact Homare 21 engine with greater power. However, the large propeller needed for the engine required long landing gear legs due to the mid-wing layout, leading to complex telescoping struts. Forward visibility was also limited by the long nose. Nicknamed "Shiden" ("Violet Lightning"), around 1,000 units were built and saw action over the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa, and Japan itself.
