Description

Designed in Germany in 1935 by Junkers as a medium and fast bomber, the Junkers Ju 88 was the most versatile aircraft of the Luftwaffe. The Junkers Ju 88 entered service in the Luftwaffe in 1939. An aircraft with a mid-wing design and entirely metallic construction, it was fast, manoeuvrable, and appreciated by crews. The Ju 88A was used for dive bombing, horizontal bombing, and torpedoing. It was extensively used in operations conducted by Germany over France, Belgium, England, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Soviet Union.

From the base Ju 88A, numerous variants were extrapolated, the last of which, the Ju 88S, displayed a top speed of 615 km/h. Many versions were created, including the Ju 88 C fighters (day and night), Ju 88R (same) and Ju 88G (night) which had the first onboard radars and the reconnaissance aircraft Ju 88D and Ju 88T, as well as other less important variants (Ju 88H). Almost 15,000 Ju 88s were produced during the Second World War. Ju 88s were used as the lower component of the Mistel system. The Ju 88 is one of the few aircraft that fought on the front line from the first to the last day of the war (for the Luftwaffe, the others are the Ar 196, the Bf 109, the Bf 110, the He 111, the Ju 52, and the Ju 87).

The G version of the Junkers Ju 88 is a derivative of the C version envisaged as a pure night fighter with night radar and other consecutive changes. The only versions are the G-1, the G-6, and the G-7, the last of which only existed at the prototype stage.
