Description
During World War II the British air defense system used aerostats with tied steel cables to protect against German air raids. These barriers prevented aircraft from flying freely and were dangerous for Luftwaffe pilots. To combat such barricades, German developed special steel cutters, also called paravanes. Some Ju-88 aircraft of A4 and A5 types were re-equipped to use these paravanes and were designated as A8 and A6 respectively. The paravanes were massive steel structures in the form of a large frame which was attached in front of the aircraft and had the purpose of pulling steel cables to the ends of the wing where the wire cutters were located. Although there were facts of combat use of aircraft with such devices, these paravane-cutters were not widespread. The reason was increase of aircraft weight and deterioration of its flight characteristics.
