Description
The Reggiane Re 2000 was an Italian low-wing monoplane fighter developed in 1939 to replace biplanes in the Regia Aeronautica. Designed by Roberto Longhi, it resembled the Seversky P-35, with a radial engine and initially five-spar wings with integral fuel tanks. The prototype first flew on 24 May 1939, proving agile and capable, but early wing designs were vulnerable to combat damage. Limited production followed, with some exported to Hungary as Héja I and II, and to Sweden as the J-20. Re 2000s served in convoy escort, attacks on Malta, and air defense roles, while Hungarian units saw Eastern Front action. Catapultable versions operated from ships. Wingspan 11 m, length 7.99 m, max speed 525 km/h, ceiling 10,500 m, range 1,400 km, armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT guns.
