Description
The Nakajima Ki-43 II “Hayabusa,” known to Allied forces as the “Oscar,” was a lightweight, highly maneuverable fighter that served as one of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force’s most prominent aircraft of World War II. The Ki-43 II improved on earlier versions with a more powerful engine, stronger airframe, and added armor and self-sealing fuel tanks—though still lightly protected compared to its opponents. Its exceptional agility, responsive controls, and tight turning radius made it a formidable dogfighter, especially in the war’s early years. Equipped with redesigned wings, upgraded armament, and better climb performance, the Ki-43 II excelled in hit-and-run tactics and close-quarters combat across the Pacific and Southeast Asian fronts.
