Description
In the early 1930s, the Italian Navy sought a catapult-launched reconnaissance seaplane. Designer Giovanni Caproni, working for IMAM, adapted the Ro.37bis into the Ro.43, a parasol-wing monoplane with streamlined floats. The prototype flew on 19 November 1934 from Naples. Production began quickly, with later models powered by a Piaggio P.IX RC 40 engine. The Ro.43 was soon followed by the Ro.44, a single-seat fighter floatplane version that first flew in October 1936. It was armed with two fixed and one flexible 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns, but its performance was limited, and only a small number were built.
