Description
The Mitsubishi A5M2b, known as the “Claude” to Allied forces, was an advanced carrier-based fighter of the late 1930s and a direct predecessor to the famed A6M Zero. As the world’s first operational monoplane carrier fighter, it introduced modern performance to the Imperial Japanese Navy with its all-metal construction, open cockpit, and fixed landing gear. The A5M2b featured a more powerful engine and refined aerodynamics, offering excellent climb rate, crisp handling, and impressive maneuverability that made it dominant in early Pacific and Sino-Japanese War combat. Though lightly armed with twin machine guns and limited in protection, it proved highly effective in dogfighting against biplanes and early monoplanes. Agile, reliable, and remarkably responsive, the A5M2b marked a major step in Japan’s naval aviation evolution.
