Description
Nikolai Polikarpov, born in 1892 in Oryol Oblast, was a key Soviet aircraft designer. Originally studying engineering after seminary, he began his aviation career during WWI. In the 1920s, he designed the USSR's first indigenous fighter, the I-1, and the famous Po-2 trainer. Arrested in 1928, he continued designing while imprisoned, creating the I-5. Fully rehabilitated in 1929, he later designed the revolutionary I-16 monoplane fighter. His I-15 and I-16 were vital to Soviet air power in the 1930s and early WWII. Polikarpov received multiple state honors before his death from cancer in 1944.
