Description
The Polikarpov I-16 Type 24 was one of the most advanced versions of the iconic Soviet I-16 fighter, introduced in the late 1930s. Powered by a Shvetsov M-63 radial engine, it could reach speeds of about 525 km/h (326 mph). The Type 24 featured improved armament, typically including four 7.62 mm machine guns or a mix of machine guns and 20 mm ShVAK cannons, along with the ability to carry rockets or light bombs. Highly maneuverable but demanding to fly, it retained the I-16’s distinctive short, stubby design and retractable landing gear, remaining in frontline service during the early years of World War II despite being outclassed by newer fighters.
