Description
The Polikarpov I-16 Type 10 was a compact, revolutionary Soviet fighter that redefined air combat in the mid-1930s. As one of the world’s first low-wing monoplane fighters with retractable landing gear, it shocked contemporaries who were still flying biplanes. Nicknamed “Ishak” (“Donkey”) by Soviet pilots for its stubborn handling, the I-16 Type 10 was fast, agile, and heavily armed for its size, typically carrying four 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns. It played a major role in the Spanish Civil War and early stages of World War II, excelling in tight turning dogfights but demanding skill due to its short fuselage and sensitive controls. Though quickly outclassed by newer designs, the I-16 Type 10 remains an icon of early modern fighter aviation.
