Description
Affectionately known as the "Mosca" (Fly) by its pilots, the Polikarpov I-16 Type 10 became a vital backbone of the Spanish Republican Air Force during 1938. Upgraded from earlier variants based on fierce combat feedback, this stubby, agile Soviet monoplane featured a beefed-up M-25V radial engine and a heavier firepower punch of four 7.62mm ShKAS machine guns. Sporting a distinctive barrel-shaped fuselage, manual hand-cranked landing gear, and pilot armor, these nimble fighters fiercely defended the skies over Spain against Nationalist forces during a rapidly shifting aerial war.
