Description
The Hawker Hurricane was designed by Sidney Camm, who recognized that monoplane fighters would replace biplanes. Development began in 1933, evolving from the Fury, and the prototype first flew on 6 November 1935. Initially powered by an early Rolls-Royce engine, it soon adopted the Merlin, giving it strong performance and reliability. Early Mk.I versions had fabric-covered wings and two-blade propellers, while later models introduced metal wings and three-blade variable-pitch propellers. The Hurricane became a mainstay of the RAF and played a decisive role in the Battle of Britain. The Mk.IIB variant improved ground-attack capability with twelve 7.7 mm machine guns and bomb racks. Powered by the 1,260 hp Merlin XX, it reached about 530 km/h and proved rugged, dependable, and highly effective.
