Description
The Heinkel He 51 was the last biplane fighter from Heinkel, developed from the earlier He 49. First flown in the early 1930s, it became one of the Luftwaffe’s first fighters alongside the Arado Ar 68. Initially successful, it saw early production as the He 51A and later the improved He 51B. Deployed in the Spanish Civil War, it was quickly outclassed by Soviet I-15s, I-16s, and even Fiat CR.32s, leading to its reassignment to ground-attack roles. One prototype was fitted with floats, resulting in the He 51W. A floatplane version, the He 51B-2, entered production in 1936, with 38 built for the German Navy’s Baltic Sea units, serving until the start of WWII.
