Description
The revolutionary German Heinkel He 162 went from design stage to deployment in the remarkably short period of seven months. In September 1944, with Germany under continual day and night Allied bombing, the German Air Ministry issued a call for proposals for a simple to control and easy to produce single-engined jet fighter. A design named Volksjager (People's Fighter) from Heinkel was selected. It was a top speed machine (750km/h), flight endurance over 30 minutes and a service ceiling of 500m. As many as 7 companies, including Messerschmitt and Arado, submitted proposals, but Heinkel's was chosen because it promised the shortest time span and that could be constructed in a relatively short time.
