Description
The Hawker Sea Hurricane was a naval version of the famous RAF fighter, adapted to operate from aircraft carriers. The Sea Hurricane Mk.Ib was equipped with catapult spools and a strengthened fuselage frame and had an arrester hook fitted for carrier landings. Many Sea Hurricanes were converted from existing RAF Hurricanes. First used operationally in February 1941, the Sea Hurricane quickly proved its worth in combat. The FAA's Sea Hurricanes operated in two distinct roles: as a fleet defence fighter operating from aircraft carriers and as a convoy escort known as a 'Hurricat', launched by catapult from specially equipped merchant ships.
