Description

The Curtiss Hawk 75 was an American fighter aircraft developed in the mid 1930s and became one of the most successful U.S. export fighters of the pre war period. Known in U.S. service as the P 36 it featured an all metal construction enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear making it modern for its time. Although it was quickly overshadowed in American service by newer designs the Hawk 75 achieved great success abroad. France became its largest operator using it effectively during the Battle of France in 1940 where it achieved a high victory to loss ratio against German aircraft. The fighter was praised for its excellent maneuverability strong structure and forgiving handling. Variants were also used by Finland Norway China Thailand and other nations. In Finnish service the Hawk 75 became one of the most successful fighters of the Winter War. Though eventually outclassed the Hawk 75 earned a reputation as a reliable and highly effective early World War II fighter.
