Description
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 was a groundbreaking British ground-attack aircraft and the world’s first operational fighter capable of vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL). Entering service with the Royal Air Force in 1969, it was designed to operate from short, improvised airstrips close to the battlefield, reducing dependence on large air bases. Powered by the innovative Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine with rotating exhaust nozzles, the Harrier GR.1 could take off vertically or perform short rolling takeoffs with heavy weapon loads. It was armed with twin 30 mm ADEN cannons and could carry bombs, rockets, and missiles for close air support. Although limited in speed and range compared to conventional fighters, the Harrier GR.1 proved highly versatile and revolutionary, laying the foundation for later Harrier variants used worldwide.
