Description
GRUMMAN OV-1D MOHAWK - U.S. Army Multi-Purpose Aircraft. It must be mentioned that the OV-1D Mohawk was developed on the basis of the OV-1C, an armed reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft. During the Vietnam War, it was found that the low ceiling of the OV-1C with its SLAR equipment limited the effective range of the aircraft. To overcome this shortcoming the OV-1D was created, combining the longer airframe of the OV-1B with the improved AN/APS-94 SLAR of the OV-1C. The first OV-1D flew in 1968, and in 1969, production and conversion of earlier models to the new OV-1D standard was undertaken. The OV-1D had more fuel capacity, more powerful engines and better performance characteristics compared to previous variants.
The last OV-1Ds were built in 1970, and in total 133 of all earlier OV-1 versions were upgraded to the OV-1D variant. Many of the OV-1Ds were used during the war in Vietnam, where they provided valuable real-time intelligence. Even with the end of the Cold War the US Army retained the Mohawks in its service. These aircraft were used in various operations including the Gulf War and the intervention in Somalia, Bosnia and other military conflicts around the world. It was only in 1996 that the OV-1 Mohawk was finally withdrawn from service with the US Army. In all of the years of its service, the OV-1 was an excellent battlefield surveillance platform during day and night operations.
