Description
The FM-2 Wildcat was a late-war variant of the famous Grumman F4F Wildcat, built by General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft Division during World War II. Designed primarily for aircraft carrier and escort carrier operations, the FM-2 featured a more powerful Wright R-1820 radial engine and a taller vertical tail to improve stability. It was lighter than earlier Wildcats, giving it better climb performance and agility. Armed with four .50 caliber machine guns, the FM-2 proved rugged, reliable, and effective against enemy aircraft and ground targets. Though outclassed by newer fighters, it excelled in its intended role, playing a key part in protecting convoys and supporting amphibious landings in the Pacific.
