Description
The AT-3S Guardian anti-submarine aircraft was designed and built by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. The aircraft was the result of a United States Navy requirement for a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The Guardian entered service in 1950 as the AF Guardian with Anti-Submarine Squadron VS-24. The Guardian was the first purpose-built anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft to enter service with any navy in the world. Hunter-Killer teams consisted of two Guardians, one AF-2W, which was fitted with APS-20 search radar and other electronic gear for detection of submarines, and one AF-2S, armed with torpedoes, depth charges and other weapons. The Guardian served with the US Navy until 1955, when it was replaced by the Grumman S2F Tracker. The AF-2S attack version of the Guardian carried a crew of four. The Guardian's performance was considered excellent and it was a very stable weapons platform.
