Description
The Grumman AF-2W/S Guardian was a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare aircraft developed for the United States Navy in the late 1940s. Notable for its unique “hunter-killer” design, it operated in pairs: the AF-2W carried radar and detection equipment, while the AF-2S was armed with torpedoes and depth charges. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney radial engine, it was the largest single-engine piston aircraft ever used from a carrier. Though effective for its time, the Guardian’s complexity and reliance on teamwork limited efficiency, leading to its replacement by more advanced single-aircraft ASW platforms in the 1950s.
